Flametongue’s Lament

Caustic lips the black lizard licks
To ease the hunger on its tongue
But phased in place of blood so slick
Are the white scale’s tears, tight and rung

They whisper promises once more
On sun scorched stones and moonlit shores
But on her spat a painful score
Only the maddest soul ignores

For flames shine bright and garner heat
But raze both the bitter and sweet
